Cold Chain Logistics in China and Japan: The future of ready meals industry

The growth of Japan’s read meal industry is closely linked to the high-quality cold chain development [*]. Since 2000, Japan has made significant strides in this sector. By 2020, Japan’s cold storage capacity reached 39.257 million cubic meters, with a per capita capacity of 0.339 cubic meters, ranking tenth globally. Today, Japan boasts a comprehensive cold chain logistics system from production to consumption.

Recently, China’s ready-meal market has seen rapid growth, driving the expansion of cold chain logistics. According to public data, by 2022, China’s ready meal market was valued at 419.6 billion yuan, with expectations to exceed one trillion yuan by 2026. To support this industry’s growth, the Guangdong provincial government has introduced the “Ten Measures,” which outlines various initiatives to nurture leading enterprises with national and global influence.

The booming prepared food industry encompasses multiple industrial chains, offering significant investment potential and opportunities. In Zhaoqing Gaoyao, the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao logistics park has accelerated both domestic and international business operations. This has effectively facilitated “westward advancement and westward export,” strengthening the logistics network in western Guangdong.
